What is Probiotic Skincare?

HomeWhat is Probiotic Skincare?

It’s the latest 2020 beauty buzz word “probiotic skincare.” But what does it mean? When we say probiotic, you’re probably thinking gut health AKA “inner health plus.” You know those blue little men that run around on the tv advertisement fighting off bad bacteria in your gut. This is to ensure a healthy gut microbiome, which brings us to your skin microbiome.

What is your skin microbiome?

Your skin microbiome is the billions of bacteria, fungi, and viruses that comprise the skin microbiota.

“The human skin has 1 billion microbes (bacteria) per square centimeter and that natural bacteria maintains the skin’s immunity and prevents pathogenic growths like atopic dermatitis (eczema) and psoriasis.” New York dermatologist Dr. Marnie Nussbaum

Good vs Bad skin bacteria

What is comes down to in layman’s terms is the more strains of good bacteria you have, the healthier your skin. Much like your gut, it’s the battle of good and evil bacteria. If your bad bacteria are outweighing the good, you may have experienced acne, eczema, dermatitis or other skin ailments.

What can inhibit your good skin bacteria?

Several things you do daily may be inhibiting your good bacteria strains such as over exfoliation and topical antibiotics. So, if you begin to avoid these skincare no-no’s and add in a little “skin probiotics” you’ll be on your way to skin perfection in no time.

What skin probiotics are currently available?

There are a few brands currently offering a variety of probiotic skincare products including Aurelia, Kinship and Tula. However, you can expect that this category in beauty is sure to explode in 2020.

What else can you do to boost your skin microbiome in 2020?

Holistic beauty nutritionist Paula Simpson explains, “Clinical research has shown that blemish-prone skin has a less-diverse skin microbiome, over-populated with pathogens and damaging stressors—compared to those with healthy skin.”

– eat foods high in prebiotics

– eat probiotic rich food

– take daily probiotic supplements

– double check the ingredients in your skincare products

– don’t touch your face!
